The Porsche 911 is up for both 2012 World Car and World Performance Car of the Year.

Awards pared down to 10 finalists

The BMW 1 Series and Porsche 911 could walk away double winners at the 2012 World Car of the Year awards.

The World Car of the Year organizers have pared down the list of contenders for the 2012 World Car of the Year and World Performance Car of the Year to 10 each, after the first round of balloting by 66 international automotive journalists.

The BMW 1 Series is up for World Car, while its M version vies for World Performance honours. The Porsche 911 has made the next ballot for both awards.

Other vehicles vying for the 2012 World Car of the Year award are (in alphabetical order) the Audi A6 and Q3, BMW 3 Series, Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera/Vauxhall Ampera, Citroen DS5, Ford Focus, Range Rover Evoque and Volkswagen Up!.

BMW-1-Series-M-Coupe

The BMW 1 Series M Coupe is one of ten finalists for World Performance Car of the Year, while the 1 Series remodelling is in the top 10 for World Car of the Year.

In addition to the 1 Series M Coupe and 911, the 2012 World Performance Car will be contested by the Audi RS 3 Sportback, BMW M5; Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Ferrari FF, Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4, McLaren MP4-12C, and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and CLS63 AMG.

There is also the possibility of the first repeat World Car winner, with the BMW 3 Series having been named 2006 World Car of the Year, the year after the Audi A6 won it.

The groups will be further pared down to three finalists in all award categories with those lists announced at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show March 6th, 2012. Trophies are handed out at the 2012 New York International Auto Show April 5, 2012. There are also World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards.

Previous World Car of the Year winners include the Nissan LEAF (in 2011), Volkswagen Polo (2010) and Golf (2009), Mazda2 (2008), Lexus LS 460 (2007), BMW 3 Series (2006) and Audi A6 (2005). The awards were inaugurated in 2003 and officially launched in January 2004.

Previous winners of the World Performance Car were the Ferrari 458 Italia (2011), Audi R8 (2010 for the V10, and in 2008), Nissan GT-R (2009), Audi RS4 (2007) and Porsche Cayman S (2006).
