General Motors finished in third in overall sales, moving a total of 12,959 units in its Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC divisions, a decrease of 11 percent compared to last January.

With the first full month of 2012 in the books, Chrysler has announced it sold the most vehicles in Canada in January, moving a total of 16,584 units.

That total was good for a 22 percent increase over January 2010. The automakers trucks made for the biggest sales, with the Ram pickup, Dodge Journey crossover and Jeep Wrangler SUV all setting January sales records. The top selling passenger vehicle was the Chrysler 300.

Ford, 2011′s sales leader, finished January with 14,978 sales, good for second place overall in Canada. The automaker was once again lead by its strong truck sales, which totalled 12,050 in January 2012, a four percent increase over the same month last year. The Fiesta subcompact saw a strong 26 percent year-over-year gain.

Toyota saw its best January ever, selling a total of 10,660 vehicles across its Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands. That was good for a combined 18 percent year-over-year increase. The redesigned Camry saw strong sales, leading the intermediate sedan segment in sales for the third straight month since its launch. Taking a hit was the Prius, with sales decreasing 63 percent year-over-year, and the Matrix, which saw sales drop nearly 46 percent.

Honda, which struggled in 2011 due in part to production issues caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, as well as flooding in Thailand, finished behind Toyota with sales totallying 9,168 including its luxury Acura division. That was good for a 127 percent year-over-year increase.

Nissan and its Infiniti luxury division both saw year-over-year increases (24 percent and 10.6 percent, respectively). Nissan was lead by the Rogue crossover, which sold 1,071 units, while Infiniti’s lineup of “G” cars topped the luxury brand, moving 202 units in total.

Several other automakers celebrated their best January ever, including Korean automakers Hyundai (7,460 units total) and Kia (3,774), as well as Volkswagen (3,109), Subaru (1,876), BMW/Mini (1,845) and Mitsubishi (1,423).
