2012 Subaru ImprezaALG announces 19 category winners for 2012

Subaru and Infiniti have driven away with the top brand honours in ALG’s 2012 Canadian Residual Value Awards. The awards are given to vehicles that are forecast to retain the highest percentage of their manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) after a three-year period for luxury vehicles and a four-year period for mainstream vehicles.

As the mainstream winner, Subaru saw three individual segment winners, including the Outback (Midsize Utility), WRX/WRX STI (Sporty Car) and Impreza (Compact Car). Infiniti, meanwhile, had two luxury segment wins with its EX35 (Luxury Compact Utility) and QX56 (Luxury Fullsize Utility).

“Residual value is a complete indicator of value, taking into account quality, durability and brand desirability,”said Geoff Helby, Regional Director of ALG Canada. “These factors drive brand strength and profitability. I’m not sure we’ve ever seen a time with such volumes of competitive products. Vehicle buyers are experiencing a product value renaissance.”

ALG says winners were chosen based on several criteria, including segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. This year’s awards are based on 2012 model year vehicles.

ALG attributes much of Subaru’s win to its low number of fleet sales, as well as minimal incentives and increasing awareness of its vehicles. The top eight mainstream brands are as follows:

1. Subaru
2. Mazda
3. Honda
4. Toyota
5. Volkswagen
6. Nissan
7. Hyundai
8. Kia

(Only brands above the industry average were ranked)

Infiniti has been the top luxury brand every year since the inception of ALG’s Canadian Residual Value Awards four years ago. The top five luxury brands are as follows:

1. Infiniti
2. Audi
3. Acura
4. BMW
5. Porsche

(Only brands above the industry average were ranked)

ALG notes that 14 of the 19 segment winners were Japanese models. The remaining five were European models.
