Winter tires are all about getting traction in adverse conditions

As we enter the digital age the word-snow tire is no longer used. Tires have become “specialists” and those for cold weather are now referred to as winter tires – available in snow, ice and combination specs.

Winter tires are all about getting traction in adverse conditions. During the Canadian winter, driving conditions vary between deep snow to sheer ice. Each condition is treated differently. To help clear some of the confusion I have compiled some interesting facts:

  • Look for the alpine symbol on the sidewall identifying the tire as winter rated.
  • The secret of the winter tire is not the aggressive tread pattern, but the fact the rubber remains soft in the cold.
  • Winter tires burn out in the summer because the rubber is too soft.
  • When the temperature is below seven degrees Celsius, it’s time to consider mounting your winter tires.
  • It costs about $100 to mount and dismount tires as the season changes, that’s why it makes sense to purchase an extra set of wheels when buying snows. They will pay for themselves in short notice.
  • Stretching the rubber while mounting and dismounting may damage the tire.
  • Take advantage if the shop offers to store you summer tires, hauling them in out of the car and finding suitable storage is a hassle.
  • Budget about $1,000 for a good set of winter tires and buy the best you can afford. And deal with a competent tire retailer.
  • Mount identical tires on each corner of the vehicle. We want the same grip level all around. Don’t forget a fifth, if you have a full-size spare.
  • Finally, you will be amazed how well you car will handle in adverse conditions, might even get out more in the winter.
