The Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Chicago Auto Show share a really tight bond. The Miata was introduced at the show in 1989, as have successive Special Editions of what has become the world’s best selling roadster.

Usually, the Miata Special Edition customizations could very easily be unveiled at a specialty show such as the annual SEMA aftermarket extravaganza inLas Vegas, but they aren’t just one-off cars, so they warrant a heartfelt welcome (usually from a captive audience of MX-5/Miata car club members).

The first Miata Special Edition (in British Racing Green) was introduced at the 1991 show, as was M Edition of 1994, the first power retractable hard-top version (PRHT) in 2006.

The 2012 MX-5 Miata Special Edition comes in Crystal White or Velocity Red with a black-only Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) – the first time a non-body-coloured hard top is available inNorth America– as well as exclusive 17-inch black gunmetal alloy wheels, black exterior accents, black heated leather seats and piano black interior finishes.

It’s available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the latter with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and is fitted with both Premium and Suspension packages with features such as a Bluetooth, SIRIUS satellite radio and Bilstein shocks.
