Based on the European i30, the Hyundai Elantra GT replaces the wagon Touring (GT was also the designation of the sedan notchback two generations back, which evolved into the Touring wagon). Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” design and slippery features (such as sleek side mirrors, small tire gaps and low overall height) contribute to a 0.30 coefficient of drag. The car is due in showrooms in summer 2012.

Touting its European style and handling, Hyundai is taking on the likes of the Ford Focus hatchback, Mazda3 Sport, Toyota Matrix and Volkswagen Golf, claiming the Elantra GT surpasses the others in passenger volume. The car features Hyundai’s first driver selectable steering mode, for improved feel and handling.

Power comes from the Nu 1.8-litre inline four-cylinder engine, equipped with Hyundai’s Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) to offer up 7.0 litres per 100 km of city driving (when equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission), and 5.1 on the highway.

For safety, the car includes seven airbags (dual front and front side impact, dual side air curtains and driver’s knee) and a host of traction aids. Hyundai’s first hidden rear-view camera aids in reversing. Bluetooth, touchscreen navigation and keyless entry with push-button start are all standard.
