It took exactly a month for the production-looking Acura ILX “concept” unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit to be introduced as a production ready model.

The car concept may not be new to Canadians, who have gone through successive generations of the Civic-derived entry-level compact Acura (first as the EL and then CSX) for 15 years, but it’s a first for the United States.

Unlike the Canada only predecessors, though, the ILX will have three powertrain choices – a 2.0-litre four-cylinder (producing 150 hp and 140 lb.-ft. of torque) delivering a reported 9.8 litres per 100 km of city driving and 7.3 on the highway; a 201-hp 2.4-litre “four” (generating 170 lb.-ft. of torque) rated at 11.7 L/100km city and 8.1 highway; and a hybrid using a 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine with integrated motor assist (netting 111 hp and 127 lb.-ft. of torque, and rated at 6.7 and 6.2 L/100km city and highway, respectively).

The 2.0-litre engine is mated to a five-speed automatic; the 2.4 uses a six-speed manual and the hybrid gets a continuously variable unit. All versions are front wheel drive.

The suspension system (front MacPherson strut/rear multi-link) features new amplitude reactive dampers, operating in two distinct performance parameters for improved ride and handling. On the subject of the latter, motion adaptive electric power steering imparts excellent steering feel and improved fuel efficiency.

The interior has seating positions for five and the trunk will hold most of their stuff. Keyless entry and push button start is standard, as is Pandora internet radio and a text to voice interface. It is expected to have the Acura traditional Premium package (with things such as leather seating, heated front seats, rearview camera and active sound cancellation) and Technology package (surround sound, navigation system with voice recognition, and real-time traffic and weather), as well as a multitude of airbags (front, side impact, side air curtains).

The car will be built exclusively at Honda’s Greenburg, Indiana plant. Its Canada-only predecessors were built in Alliston, Ontario.
