2013 Aston Martin V12 ZagatoFifty-plus years in the making

Aston Martin is set to unveil the production version of the Zagato V12 coupe at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, following a positive response to the two concept models that participated in the 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race in 2011.

The V12 Zagato will be built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, and will have a very limited run of 150 vehicles. Each vehicle will cost £330,000, with first deliveries set for the fall of 2012.

The latest vehicle from Aston Martin will be constructed from a combination of aluminum and carbon fibre to help keep weight down. More specifically, the hood, door and signature Zagato “double bubble” roof will use aluminum, while the front and rear fenders, door sills and trunk lid surround will be made of up carbon fibre.

The roof isn’t the only part of the exterior that’s an homage to Zagato. The three-dimensional composite material mesh on the new grille echoes Zagato’s “Z” moniker.

This rear-wheel drive vehicle’s 6.0-litre V12 engine will produce 420 lb-ft of torque at 5,750 rpm, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

The interior uses seven Bridge of Weir leathers, while the seats and headlining employ hand-stitched quilting. “Z” embroidery is added to the headrests, while carbon fibre is used on the dashboard and centre stack.

“Our relationship with Zagato stretches back more than 50 years. Together in that time we have created a series of very special cars” said Aston Martin’s CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez. “The first – the DB4GT Zagato – is a true icon: fast, beautiful and incredibly desirable. In the V12 Zagato I believe we have captured the spirit of that car and combined it with a confident twist of modernity to give it a character all of its own.”
