New SUV shows its stripes

Porsche has announced the official name of its new sport utility vehicle – the Macan – while also releasing a sketch of a concept version of the SUV that goes into production in 2013.

The Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for “tiger”, and Porsche says the new vehicle combines several characteristics of the animal, including “suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics.”

“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche,” said Bernhard Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG.

The vehicle will be built at the automaker’s Leipzig, Germany production facility, which is being expanded into a “fully-fledged production plant”, including a body assembly line and paint shop. Porsche will be investing 500 million euro into the plant expansion, with 1,000 jobs being added in the “medium-term”.

With the Macan, Porsche aims to emulate the success of the other SUV in its lineup, the Cayenne, which is a consistently strong seller for the automaker.

No further details, such as powertrains or pricing, have been released yet by Porsche.
