Mini is expanding the Cooper nameplate with the unveiling of the Mini Clubvan Concept – a panel van conversion – at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

As expected from the name, the concept is actually based on the Cooper Clubman (the longer wheelbase Mini wagon with two doors front, a right side access panel and barn doors at the rear), sharing the wagon’s dimensions but replacing the glass behind the front doors with an opaque polycarbonate. The rear doors’ windows are heavily tinted to keep prying eyes out.

The concept’s load carrying is increased with the removal of the rear seats in order to create an expanded cargo area (which can be accessed from the rear or through the “Clubdoor” for smaller items).

Ideal for small businesses or around-town couriers, the Clubvan Concept has a cargo floor elevated to rear bumper level, to make it easier to load up and slide in cargo. There is also a cage behind the (front only) seats to keep cargo confined to the trunk/cargo area. Mini says the vehicle would also be ideal for the outdoor recreationalist who might have more equipment to tote along than would fit in a compact vehicle.

Six fastening points are recessed into the floor, with straps stretched between them to secure cargo, and there is a 12-volt plug socket for additional practicality.

This is not the first panel van from Mini – Morris made a Mini Van (1960-82), as well as a passenger wagon version called the Mini Traveller (1961-69), which would be the precursor of today’s Mini Clubman.
