December 7th, 2011 - Daniel Barron

1 – Install matching winter tires on all wheels of your vehicle.

2 – Check weather conditions before hitting the roads.

3 – Clear the snow and ice off your vehicle.

4 – Give yourself extra distance to stop, as roads may be icy.

5 – Dress properly – wear warm clothing.

6 – Have your battery, ignition system, lights and brakes tested.

7 – Pack a winter driving emergency kit in your vehicle.

8 – Ensure your wipers are in good working condition.

9 – Bring a cell phone for emergency purposes, but never use it while driving.

10 – Check tire pressure at least once a month.

Wow! Really deep – is this for someone who’s never been to Canada? Should we really clear snow and ice off? Who’d a thunk?

  2. Jim,

Despite your sarcastic reply, just wait and see how many people don’t clear snow and ice off their car this winter. Same with checking tire pressure once a month, replacing wipers when needed, packing an emergency kit, etc, etc. This stuff may be repeated every year, but so long as drivers aren’t heeding the advice, it’s worth mentioning.

how about starting your car for a good 5-10 mins if it’s -20C outside, before taking off?

  4. Santiago Ziegler says:

No, Maria. You don’t need to waste so much fuel.
30 seconds is enough for the oil to start pumping around the engine.
The only parts that need to be warmed up, will be warmed up by driving.
    Cheers!

Very good tips. I am guilty of not following all these recommendations and appreciate the reminder.
