Michelin is expanding its X-Ice tire line with a tire it says will deliver the ultimate performance and protection in all winter conditions.

“We all want to feel safe when driving, no matter the weather or road conditions, and this tire does just that. It gives you peace of mind,” says Normand Latremouille, winter category manager for Michelin North America. “The innovative technology in the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tire not only offers complete confidence while driving in any winter condition, but also fuel-efficiency and long-lasting performance.”

An ice tire with enhanced snow abilities, the X-Ice Xi3 uses Michelin’s third generation winter-grip technology to deliver 17% better grip on ice, improving braking distances by a reported 7%. On snow, it is reported to deliver 6% better traction and improving stopping distances by 3%.

Among the new technologies used in the X-Ice Xi3 (from its predecessor the Xi2, which will remain available in select sizes to cover segments not initially reached by the Xi3) are the Cross Z sipe for stable handling, Block Edge for improved grip, Micro-Pumps to absorb water and the FleX-Ice silica-based rubber compound. Also, the unique tear-drop shape of the vertical sipes improve grip during acceleration and braking.

Further, the MaxTouch construction creates a unique contact patch that evenly distributes driving forces during acceleration, braking and cornering, resulting in increased tire life.

The Green X branding designates reduced CO2 emissions and long wear. The X-Ice Xi3 comes with a 60,000 km tread wear warranty.

“When you buy winter tires, you want to feel confident you are getting a premium product that will last and perform winter after winter,” adds Latremouille. “The Michelin X-Ice Xi3’s revolutionary design and technology serves up safety and longevity. Quite simply, it is the best winter tire in the market.”

The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tire will be available in fall 2012 in 33 sizes – ranging from 14 to 18 inch rim diameters – and will cover more than 90% of the passenger car market (including minivans).
