Imagery of Olympic proportions

- March 4th, 2010

The Vancouver Olympics leave us with many memories and showed us a great many things. To me, it leaves me with a whole new way of looking at things.

For example, time and again you’ll read reference to a great handling car with the phrase “as if it were on rails”. Well, how about the car handles almost as good as a Canadian Women’s Bobsleigh in the groove on an icy track? And if it’s an all-wheel drive vehicle, the imagery would be even more appropriate. If the handling is sloppy, you could say it handles as well as a German Women’s Two-man Bobsleigh steering out of an icy corner.

But there’s more. Some vehicles have no soul whatsoever, while others (like Jaguars and Camaros) have almost as much character as a Joannie Rochette bronze-medal winning performance. And if you want to compare a classy interior, how about “more elegant than a Virtue/Moir Ice Dance performance”.

Those classy interiors are inviting and often in four door models, the rear door openings leave a lot to be desired. Every once in a while, though, you come across an opening that’s bigger than the gap between Ryan Miller’s legs. Other times, the door swings out as wide as Roberto Luongo hugging a post.

Imagery for engine power is often tired because there aren’t many things to which you can compare engine outputs, outside of horses and ponies. Now, you can always say an engine is more powerful than a Shea Webber mesh-scorching slapshot. Or, it can have more guts than a Canadian Cross-Country skier. If it’s got no go, it can be as overwhelming as a French downhill skier’s start.

And of course, the transmission plays a big part making sure that power is utilized as best as possible, so you could say the synchronization is considerably better than a Canadian rock icon’s opening ceremony performance, or nearly as good as a Canadian Long-Track Speed Skating Pursuit team.

And a jumbled dashboard can be termed as more confusing than a Short Track Speed Skating relay or as hectic as a Snow Cross semi-final. If it’s precise, it can be as near perfect as a Chinese Couple’s Figure Skating Routine. If it’s over the top, how about as down to earth as a Shawn White half-pipe run.

And I’m just scratching the surface here. There is a ton of new imagery just begging to put the old tired sayings to rest. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there’s more imagery available than during a Canadian Olympiad closing ceremony.
