No. 4 scores a pair

- February 13th, 2012

Sure Shane Prince scored a hat trick and Tyler Toffoli moved one closer to Blake Dunlop on the all-time 67′s scorers list, but after a 9-0 rout of the Belleville Bulls, the game puck went to Sean Callaghan.
The rookie defenceman scored his first 2 OHL goals in his second game since moving from D to forward.

Callaghan is filling in for injured forwards Dalton Smith (hip) and John McFarland (shoulder).
Smith is expected to return soon, while McFarland is in Florida where the Panthers docs are testing out his bum wing.

Here’s a bit from the game story that ended up on the cutting room floor:

Only 150 goals behind Toffoli is rookie Sean Callaghan. And while his teammates didn’t rush out to paint his jersey No. 4 all over the J. Benson Cartage Centre ice, he did take some good-natured ribbing after scoring his first two OHL goals in his second game since moving from defence to forward.

“It’s something that’s new and exciting for me,” said Callaghan. “I feel more confident on D, but if the coaches ask me to play up front I’ll do it.”

Captain Marc Zanetti, who scooped up the puck for Callaghan, added a powerplay goal in the first period, before Prince completed his hat trick with a pair of second period goals 2:01 apart. Sean Monahan scored his 29th before Callaghan snapped his first career goal past reliever Charlie Graham, and added his second on a Belleville giveaway with 54 seconds left in the game.
The 67′s went 2-for-4 on the powerplay while holding the Bulls scoreless on seven man advantage opportunities.
