Bombers rookie camp, Day 3

- June 1st, 2012

The Bombers wrapped up rookie camp on Friday, and now the youngsters will get to see how they do against the big boys.

The veterans report for physicals on Saturday, and then everyone hits the field on Sunday.

Here’s the latest …

• The Bombers added a pair of imports on Friday: defensive end Brandon Akpunku and defensive back Jeremy McGee.

• New to the CFL this year. Teams can keep 75 players, excluding non-counters, past the start of main training camp. They don’t have to trim down until after the first pre-season game. The Bombers currently have 69 counters and seven non-counters, which are draft picks and CIS free agents.

• There is still no sign of defensive back/returner Demond Washington. No one knows when he’s going to show up, either.

• The rookies were moving rather well on Friday, and a few members of the team brass believe this is one of the most talented rookie crops they’ve had in a while. I’m sure every team is saying that today, but I don’t recall the Bombers mentioning that in the last few years.

• Defensive backs Jovon Johnson and Jonathan Hefney will be late for training camp due to personal reasons.

• Don’t forget to join our live chat at 2 p.m., when Paul Friesen and I will talk all things Blue and Gold.

Bombers rookie camp, Day 3

- June 1st, 2012

The Bombers wrapped up rookie camp on Friday at Canad Inns Stadium, and now it’s time to see how they do against the big boys.

The veterans will report for physicals on Saturday, and then everyone will hit the field on Sunday morning.

Here’s the latest …

• The Bombers added a pair of imports on Friday: defensive end Brandon Akpunku and defensive back Jeremy McGee. That brought their training camp roster to a total of 76 players.

• Defensive back/kick returner Demond Washington still has not shown up, and head coach Paul LaPolice wasn’t sure when he was arriving, either.

• New in the CFL this year: Teams don’t have to cut down to 68 players for the start of main camp. They can keep 75 counters, plus any non-counters (draft picks) until after the first pre-season game. Right now the Bombers have 69 counters and seven non-counters.

• LaPolice said defensive backs Jovon Johnson and Jonathan Hefney will be late for the start of camp due to personal reasons.

• The rookies looked good on Friday, but then again they always look good on Day 3. The big receivers, Chris Matthews and Doug Pierce, looked sharp yet again, as did returner Jeremy Blount.

• Some members of the brass are saying this is one of the most talented rookie classes they’ve seen in a while. While I’m sure every team is saying that today, I can’t recall the Bombers saying that in recent years.

• Don’t forget to join our live blog this afternoon at 2 p.m. CDT. Paul Friesen and myself will chat about rookie camp and attempt to answer any questions you might have about main camp.
