Bomber camp, Day 5

- June 7th, 2012

After a light day on Wednesday, the Blue and Gold hit the field hard on Thursday for a couple of practices in the sweltering heat.

Here’s what we saw …

• The most notable news came during the first session when right tackle Andre Douglas fell down during a special teams drill and appeared to injure his hip. He was on the turf for a few minutes before slowly making his way to the dressing room. He didn’t return, although it’s not believed to be a serious injury.

• Curiously, Paul Swiston replaced Douglas at right tackle — and not third overall draft choice Tyson Pencer. Then again, Swiston has a year of pro practice under his belt while Pencer has a week.

• It was Paul Hubbard’s first chance to run with the first-team offence at the Z receiver spot, and he made the most of it. He made several nice grabs and earned some post-practice praise from head coach Paul LaPolice. Say that 10 times fast.

• A handful of coaches from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks came up to watch Thursday’s practice. LaPolice welcomes any collegiate or Football Manitoba coaches to come out and watch practice.

• Also getting post-practice praise from LaPolice were defensive end Kenny Mainor, and the punters, Mike Renaud and Eric Wilbur.

• I had a chat with middle linebacker hopeful Henoc Muamba and defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke, who says the position battle is too close to call at this stage of the game. And there won’t be a rotational system, either. One of them is going to be the man. That story will be on winnipegsun.com later tonight and in the paper tomorrow.

• Hey, the Bombers have an assistant director of football operations! His name is David Siddall, and he used to work under the Doug Berry and Mike Kelly regimes. Wonder when the team is going to announce it?

• Don’t forget to join us on Friday at 2 p.m. for our weekly online Bomber chat. It can be found at winnipegsun.com, and you can go there now to set up a reminder.
