Blue Bombers turn to Dorzon

- June 27th, 2012

Greetings from Bomberland.

Last day of workouts before the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hit the road, bound for the left coast for their CFL season opener against the B.C. Lions.

The Blue Bombers were quick to dismiss the suggestion the match-up had any additional meeting, considering the result the last time the two clubs met at the end of November inside B.C. Place.

You can never expect that winning a regular season game can make up for the sting of defeat associated by losing in the Grey Cup, but you can be sure the Blue Bombers are highly motivated to show they can compete with the Lions, since so many are predicting doom and gloom for them this season.

Bloi-Dei Dorzon was thrust into the spotlight a bit on Monday after starting tailback Chris Garrett went down with a torn Achilles’ but the severity wasn’t learned until later, so the full spotlight was on Dorzon Tuesday.

Not only did he re-iterate that he’s ready for this shot, he shared a deeply personal and tragic story of how his sister Watchee, was murdered back in 2004. I’ll take a closer look in my main story later on at www.winnipegsun.com and in the print edition.

Dorzon as the starter means that non-import Anthony Woodson is going to be the No. 2 back on Friday night and he’s stoked about his CFL debut. He’ll be the focus on my sidebar.

As for the daily injury updates, offensive tackle Glenn January left the workout early with some lower-body soreness but is expected to be ready to start on Friday.

Defensive end Jason Vega remains an option as well, though he didn’t participate on Tuesday.

Running back Chad Simpson, linebacker Marcellus Bowman, receiver Cory Watson, offensive tackle Andre Douglas and defensive back Deon Beasley have all been ruled out.

No sign of Chris Garrett today, but there’s a chance he will be made available next week to discuss the season-ending injury.

That’s going to do it for now. Time to get writing.
