Bombers practice, Aug. 21

- August 21st, 2012

Two Bombers have claimed CFL player of the week honours after last week’s 32-25 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Quarterback Joey Elliott took offensive honours after throwing for more than 400 yards, while Alex Hall snagged the defensive nod for his two forced fumbles and a sack.

Here’s what else happened today …

• Wide receiver Chris Matthews and cornerback Jovon Johnson both left practice with ankle injuries, but head coach Paul LaPolice doesn’t think they’re serious.

• Running back Chad Simpson didn’t practise once again, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be out there this weekend. Simpson is expected to practise on Wednesday.

• Quarterback Buck Pierce said he wouldn’t be dealing in hypotheticals when asked how he felt about LaPolice not confirming Pierce would be the starter when he returned to health. It was easy to tell Pierce is a little peeved about the subject, but he’s still saying all the right things. We’ll examine the Pierce situation more in Wednesday’s paper.

• Defensive tackle Bryant Turner sat out Tuesday’s practice with what LaPolice called a “wobbly ankle.” He is expected back on the field Wednesday.

• The Bombers are five-point underdogs on Friday night.
