Bombers return home

- July 14th, 2012

The Blue Bombers returned home to Winnipeg on Saturday morning after a disappointing 42-10 defeat to the Edmonton Eskimos.

I was on an early flight with about 18 players and staffers, so I didn’t have an opportunity to speak with head coach Paul LaPolice.

However, there’s no official update on either Buck Pierce (left ankle) or Alex Brink (head), both of whom were knocked out of Friday’s game.

We’re expecting the Blue Bombers to provide an update on Sunday, when they return to the field.

However, given the fact he was in a walking boot and needed a crutch to help him walk, we’re going to go out on a limb and say Pierce isn’t an option for Wednesday.

Speaking of injuries, the other thing to monitor over the next couple days is whether or not punter Mike Renaud will be able to play this week.

He sustained an ankle injury in the first half, but played through it. He was limping noticeably on Saturday at the airport but will be getting treatment the next few days and there’s some buzz that he won’t miss any action. Again, more will be known by Monday. If Renaud can’t go, either Justin Palardy will add the punting duties to his portfolio or the Blue Bombers could consider bringing back Eric Wilbur or signing a non-import as well.

A few media colleagues were reporting that Brink said he was not dealing with headaches or concussion-like symptoms, so it’s possible he could be ready to start Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Argonauts.

Given the nature of the injury and how he performed in the fourth quarter, I’ll be surprised if it isn’t Joey Elliott who gets the start vs the Boatmen.

He looked poised in the huddle and despite the fact the game was out of reach, he put up some pretty decent numbers. Elliott and Chris Matthews showed some chemistry, though Matthews is showing chemistry with all three QBs so far.

For the paper tomorrow, I’m doing a piece with reaction from Elliott, a notebook on some of the leftovers from the post-game thoughts of several Bombers and a column on the situation the Blue Bombers currently find themselves in and the hole they’ll try to dig out of.

Kirk Penton returns to the beat on Sunday, as he’s going to be covering the game on Wednesday from the complex formerly known as Sky Dome.

I’ll be back Friday for the weekly live chat. Get your questions ready.
