Brink starting at QB vs Eskimos

- July 22nd, 2012

The answers started to pour in as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers returned to the practice field on Sunday morning.

The burning question for those in Bomber Nation revolved around who was going to be starting at QB this week against the Edmonton Eskimos and your answer is….(drum roll please)….

None other than Alex Brink.

Brink was told by Blue Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice that he’s getting the nod and was kind enough to share the information with members of the media after running the first-team offence on Sunday.

Brink said he remained confident and was excited about the opportunity.

LaPolice was blunt in his daily media briefing, saying that Brink deserved another chance but that he had to play better.

Joey Elliott also told us that he supports the decision to have Brink start and will continue to support him, as he always does.

You can debate the merits of staying with Brink at QB until the cows come home.

We’re not sure how long Brink’s leash is going to be on Thursday — he was asked and said he wasn’t concerned about being on a short one — but you can’t be overly surprised that LaPolice has chosen to stick with the path of continuity.

You can easily argue that Brink deserves another shot against the Eskimos and now he’s going to get one. It’s up to him to see what he can do with the opportunity.

Brink should have another weapon at his disposal with the return of receiver Cory Watson, a guy who is physical and should help with the intermediate routes over the middle. Watson’s presence has been missed to date, there’s no way around it.

Tackle Andre Douglas (hip) spent some time with first-team offence but then hurt his ankle and didn’t complete practice, so we’re not sure about his status for Thursday, while linebacker Marcellus Bowman (leg) did some running but remains questionable.

Linebacker Dustin Doe hurt his ankle near the end of the workout and will be re-evaluated on Monday.

The list of players who didn’t participate in the workout includes:

RB Chad Simpson (leg, will play)

WR Chris Matthews (undisclosed, will play)

WR Terrence Edwards (lower-body, questionable)

DT Bryant Turner (undisclosed, questionable)

DT Brandon Collier (shoulder, out)

S Ian Logan (lower-body, out)

DB Alex Suber (lower-body, out)

LB Brandon Stewart (lower body, out)

The main story we’re working on for print and online editions revolves around the decision to stay with Brink at QB, while the sidebar deals with Watson’s return.

Have a great Sunday.
