Why is Joe Mack running sprints?

- August 29th, 2012

The Bombers held the first official full practice under interim head coach Tim Burke on Wednesday. It didn’t look much different than a Paul LaPolice practice, but the players said it’s different so I’ll take their word for it.

Here’s the latest on all things Bombers …

• Terence Jeffers-Harris got in trouble from his bosses in Saskatchewan for having too much glee on Twitter about LaPolice’s firing. “I told him, ‘At the end of the day, you’re going to have your thoughts,’ ’’ Riders head coach Corey Chamblin told The Leader-Post. “I can’t change a man’s thoughts. He needs to recognize that if he’s a member of the Riders organization, what he does directly affects us as well. Putting it out to the public isn’t the way to do it. If you want to say something to your brother or your sister, do it that way. He has to learn and we’ve talked about it. It will cease one way or the other.’’ Jeffers-Harris seemed defiant, however. “It was a personal page of mine and I tweet my feelings,’’ he told the L-P.

• This is the first time in Labour Day Classic history in which the Riders go in with a 3-5 record and the Bombers go in with a 2-6 mark. Just thought you should know.

• The Bomber offence had to run sprints after practice in the stifling heat and humidity because they went offside twice during the team portion. GM Joe Mack was even running them. He looks to be in tremendous shape, but shouldn’t he be out scouting NFL camps instead of running sprints?

• Or, as Bomber fan Darrell Pomarenski pointed out following Wednesday’s practice: “Maybe he’s running them for all the mistakes he’s made.” Zing!

• Cornerback Jeremy McGee didn’t practise on Wednesday due to a hamstring problem, but he didn’t play last week so the roster won’t be affected. Johnny Sears is still out with an unknown injury, so Demond Washington was at his cornerback spot on Wednesday.

• Chad Simpson took his usual Day 1 off and will probably do the same on Thursday. Burke expects him to practise before Sunday’s tilt.

• A few links for you. Here is Paul Friesen looking at Gary Crowton going it alone with the offence, here’s my piece on new de facto defensive co-ordinator Chip Garber, who isn’t afraid to speak his mind, and what in the world is going on with Carl Volny?
