I’m reading William Styron’s Lie Down in Darkness. That last word certainly spells out the tone of the novel. It’s a traditional Southern tragedy involving the Loftis family. It’s no much the story of a dysfunctional family as it is a broken family.
Interestingly enough, the book is being turned into a movie, although only one significant actor has been cast — Kristen Stewart is set to play Peyton Loftis if one believes everything you read on the Internet. Supposedly she beat out Jennifer Lawrence for the role. I think Stewart is a decent actress. I think she can pull it off. But Lawrence would have been a good choice, too.
It’s one of the few books recently that has engaged me. This morning, as I was getting ready to go to work, I was looking forward to the end of my day when I would get a chance to read a few more pages.
