PAUL REVERE

JBNBlog missed Paul Revere & the Raiders’ rare London appearance on the weekend (Saturday, June 2)  . . . have they ever been here before? The Western Fair, maybe?

I had to leave town because of Uncle Sam’s deal . . . it’s so neat to meet your baby where the action is  . . . such a good thing . . . hungry for those good things . . .  with a real fine girl like you . . . you’re going to find out, girl, it’s too late . . . it’s just like me  . . . have you got yourself a brand new baby, don’t tell me maybe … grab your woman, it’s Louie, Louie time . . . all this & more still play around in my head in a Revere set list.

Well maybe not much was to be missed . . . apparently, Paul Revere lards the set list with covers. Here are the bands covered: Buffalo Springfield/Animals (Vietnam-themed medley), Grand Funk & for the encore (!) Tommy James & the Shondells (!!). Anyone able to match the songs Revere used at the Plunkett Estate with those groups is eligible for the usual prizes.

Crowd reportedly loved it, schtick et al. JBNBlog just played a few Raiders hits (their own hits, sounding dam fine) by way of consolation.

Frankie Valli was at the Plunkett Estate on Friday, June 1. The reports on Valli are much more positive . . . the man may be 78 but he still has it going on 50 years after Sherry hit No. 1.

Back in the day, the Raiders were a prototype for any garage band & so JBNBlog scorned the Four Seasons because they looked like old guys (you know, 30something) & — the sad foolish truth — Valli’s shrill falsetto was a pain.

JBNBlog hears it better now . . . here’s my Valli question. Did he & the dozen-plus, including local hires, play Marlena? It was the flipside of the much inferior Candy Girl &, says Wikipedia, reached No. 36 on its own steam after a June, 1963 release. Marlena is JBNBlog’s favourite Four Seasons’ song . . . stomping beat, unforgettable roop-doop-doop-doo-bee-doop nonsense syllable chorus & Valli’s admonishing the flirtatious Marlena in that undeniable voice spells singalong joy  . . . it could be a hit this June or next June too with a few contemporary touches.

All these summers later: Paul Revere. Frankie Valli. JBNBlog salutes you both for brightening up the radio way back then & rawkin on all the way into 2012 & beyond.
