An atmospheric Cam Paton photograph/portrait of Garth Hudson meeting a friend from back in the day, Marilyn (hope that is right) Hobbs . . . she is the mother of Jeremy Hobbs. Garth & Hudson met many friends & fans at the Palasad on June 27 after their appearance at the London Music Awards ceremony at the LPL’s Wolf Performance Hall.
London’s greatest rock & roller & (arguably) its greatest musician ever turns 75 today (Aug. 2, 2012) . . . JBNBlog joins many others in sending greetings in the general direction of Woodstock, N.Y., to Garth & Maud Hudson.
Despite many hints from this corner over the years, the City of London doesn’t appear to be doing (or have done) anything special this year or any other year to acknowledge Garth’s tremendous range of accomplishments. Still with the his places in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Juno Hall of Fame & a few other such honours, the world of music has welcomed Garth into the pantheon. Windsor, where he was born, has done right by Garth, if memory serves. He would, of course, be a noble addition to the galaxy in the London Music Hall of Fame, administered by my friends at the Jack Richardson Music Awards.
Enough on that score. It’s a birthday . . . so happy birthday to the witty, beautiful man with slow rate of speech & the boundless creativity . . . & once again, props to Bret Downe & Scene Magazine for organizing the June 27 tribute at the LPL’s Wolf Performance Hall. It brought Garth & Maud back to London for some terrific music & the gathering of friends & fans at the Palasad later that night was a sweet occasion indeed.
In the spirit of what we might do with a Garth Hudson tour of the Forest City, here’s a #ldnont history mystery: On what front porch might you have found Garth celebrating his 20th or 21st birthday, possibly honking out R&B notes on his sax? For the usual JBNBlog quiz prizes, what would that address have been?
