Kitty Wells, in 1943, with the Wright Brothers family band. Who is that fiddle player?

JBNBlog was at that windy show (top photo) at the Western Fair grandstand in June, 1979, when Kitty Wells came to London . . . it wasn’t a Western Fair show as such? Who did bring Kitty Wells to London on that occasion? Luv the hair upflipping on the guitarist at left & the look on Johnny Wright’s face. Now, that’s a country smile.

This post is basically an excuse to run that fine photo and the one from 1943 which is in The Free Press library. Kitty looks beautiful in it and would have been about 24 . . . she married Johnny Wright (who is in there too somewhere) in 1937. Not sure of all the IDs, but do know the fiddle player’s name.

So here’s the quiz: Name that fiddler. He would have been about 19 when he was standing up to the WNOX (Knoxville, Tenn.) mic here after dropping out of high school in 1942. Most of us know him as a guitarist. Fiddle apparently is what he played early in his career. For the usual JBNBlog prizes, who is that fiddler with the most enigmatic smile in the whole group?

  1. Wayne Mann says:

The fiddle player to me looks like Ched Atkins.

Wow. That’s who it is . . . congratulations, Wayne, on the accuracy & speed of your response. The celebrity judges are impressed.
One thing that strikes me about the photo is how Kitty Wells & Chet Atkins went off in separate career directions so soon after 1942-1943 when (Wikipedia says) Atkins moved on. Kitty would become the undisputed Queen of Country Music in the 1950s and Atkins would be the guitar wizard & production guru on countless recordings.
