Western Don Wright music faculty media ace Janis Wallace has just sent along the following good news about a grad student Daniel Rosen who is helping rawk MuchMusic. It turns ouf the NB singer Danyka Nadeau whose hit Rosen co-wrote etc. is a York student.

JBNBlog is impressed by Rosen’s industry smarts & also by his studies at the University of West London (England) . . . is he a Chelsea fan?

You may be able to guess who sponsored the MuchMusic Covers contest . . . make mine a Vernors, pls.

Thanks, Janis, for all the following:

Daniel Rosen, second-year musicology doctoral student at the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western, produced and co-wrote a song that is in heavy rotation on MuchMusic. Second Best is performed by Danyka Nadeau, who beat out thousands of hopefuls to become the winner of the first ever Covers Casting Call in 2011. Now the teen singer has released Second Best in her first music video and is receiving a lot of attention from the industry.

The MuchMusic blog states: “Danyka sings about heartbreak on her new single, walking the streets of Toronto as her ex-boyfriend walks ahead of her with his new girlfriend. Singing her heart out, Danyka shines in a blue dress during her emotional performance.”

Rosen, who is also Nadeau’s manager, contacted the singer through Facebook after her Covers win and asked if she needed a producer. “I know how to get money, get the right people and put her together with other songwriters,” he said.

Those skills garnered three grants, two from MuchMusic to produce the video and a website, and one from FACTOR (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records). The duo is working on another video.

“The new model of the industry is having your hand in a lot of places,” said Rosen. “You can’t just be a songwriter or a producer or a manager. You have to do it all. You have to handle booking and marketing, have good contacts and create good social media outlets. That allows people like me and Danyka to succeed because you can reach so many people.”

He said his songwriting is different with each artist. “My strength is organization and song form. I make the melody, chorus and lyrics make sense and as strong as they can be.”

Rosen, who has a master’s degree in audio technology from the University of Western London, in England, was attracted to Western University by his advisor, professor Jay Hodgson.

“His research is ground-breaking,” said Rosen. “What he’s trying to accomplish with recording practice and the music aspect of communication is what I want to do. This is a great school that has given me so many opportunities. I am teaching desk-top music production so I get to share what I know, to give back.”

Rosen hopes to juggle teaching and research with the music industry and songwriting.
