The late Doug Keenan made a strong contribution to the London jazz scene on trumpet, piano, with his pen, mentoring, goodwill etc . . . the temptation in writing about him for My London this week was to say he was a brilliant trumpeter who refused to blow his own horn — because he played for the rest of the band, the audience, the muse, anybody but him. There, I did say it because it’s true.
JBNBlog loves these photos for the sense of joy they convey . . . these people love being together & are having a blast. Where was Bumper’s? Was it Bumpers? You know they had a helluva band . . .the date here says 1993. Or is it earlier than that.
Thanks to everyone who has been sharing their memories of Doug Keenan . . . right now, I can see him smiling alongside Art Covey, bass, as they play so beautifully during that sweet night every year when the Sunfest sponsors & friends gather at the Aroma.
