JBNBlog is a jazz fan . . . & on behalf of a friend in Britain on the trail of albums by some Canadian jazz stars I should know about. But don’t.
Any help in finding copies of these albums is greatly appreciated. The friend is a jazz scholar so they’ll be listened to & in excellent company
Jazz vocalist Phyllis Marshall (born in Barrie!!) has an album with Buddy Tate in the band . . . it’s Columbia (Canadian) 314.
Don’t know more than that.
Fred Stone played piano, trumpet, flugelhorn . . . CBC/Radio Canada International (Cat. #RCI 377) has the Lawrence of Arabia theme on it.
Ron Collier was a composer, conductor and trombone player . . . . by memory & with help from The CanadianEncyclopedia.com these are likely on my friend’s list
Ron Collier Tentet. Collier trombone and conductor, Stone and Basso flg and trumpet, Piltch alto saxophone, Bickert guitar, and others. 1965. CTL CTLS-5059
Duke Ellington “North of the Border” in Canada. Jazz and string orch, Collier conductor, soloists including Ellington piano, Stone flg, Bickert guitar, Piltch alto saxophone and clarinet, Watanabe trombone. 1967; Decca DL-75069 (reissued in 1973 as Collages. MPS BASF-21704)
Any help greatly appreciated . . . & after some Google searches, I’m encouraged. The recordings are around & the search is on.
Phyllis Marshall, Fred Stone & Ron Collier, we salute you.
