Alec Farquhar, c. 2007. JBNBlog recalls a 1968 campaign photo which had the younger Alec mischievously astride one of those Crimean War cannons in Victoria Park. Or maybe we decided not to do that.

JBNBlog has been slow off the cryptic diary mark these last few days . . . so here’s a three-in-one with two fine Alecs (artist Wyse and activist, student politician Farquhar), Keewatin Dewdney, Bill Brady & a hydro line on fire.

I can still see it sparking like fury and crackling in the night near Regent & Waterloo if memory serves. Woo. Scary stuff. Stay away, kids. I did.

There are two campaigns for Central student council presidency here. In 1968, Alec Farquhar — a brilliant & radical soul & on his way to a great life in the front lines — would win. In 1970, fellow Goat Band member & free spirit Juris Jurjans would speak brilliantly (JBNBlog still blushes to think people credited me with Juris’s words) would lose by about 50 votes because we just couldn’t win over the Grade 9s.

I lived in a house with Alec near the AGO c. 1974-1975. He was a UofT law student & a strong advocate for the Union of Injured Workers . . . . this is the place where Bob Rae, another law student, took my copy of Clear The Track Here Comes Shack off the turntable so he could play Aretha Franklin. JBNBlog may have told you that story already.

I haven’t seen Alec for too many years . . . from the sound of it, he continues to do great work for good people who need a system to make the system work fairly.

Here is what Alec was up to c. 2007:

Alec Farquhar is the new Managing Director of the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW)Alec brings strong qualifications to the position.

He comes to OHCOW from the Ministry of Labour where he was the Director of the Occupational Health and Safety Branch. He led the branch through an organizational review and restructuring to better equip it for an agenda of multiple initiatives.

Alec has extensive experience in both workers’ compensation and occupational health and safety.

As for my music back in the day . . .

Something Else by the Kinks is fondly remembered for Waterloo Sunset, one of the best rock songs ever, & other fine music & where is my copy where is my copy where is my copy?

*An occasional series based on a v. cryptic diary kept as a pen&ink forerunner to JBNBlog during the late 1960s, when our family lived in London, Stratford (parts of summers of 1966 & 1967), Victoria, B.C. (July 4, 1968-July 4, 1969) and then London again until June, 1970 when I was in Grade 13.

Hooray . . . or as Dave Davies might put it: “Let’s all drink to the death of a clown!”
