Speaking of all the great music ex-Cream members made since the supergroup said Goodbye, isn’t that Jack Bruce on the right in this photo of Tony Williams Lifetime-reflecting supergroup Spectrum Road. A friend is off to see Spectrum Road at Toronto tonight (Wednesday) so This Night, This Song is with us, JBNBLog may have a review down the road. Courtesy of lancegold.blogspot.com

Forty-five years to the day Fresh Cream joined the JBNBlog record collection, it still sounds grand. Side One, which I’ve just been listening to, is pretty raw. Some of it is a lot like the pop rock which supposedly drove Eric Clapton from the Yardbirds.& much of it – when Clapton, Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker are thundering away or easing into a blues – is undeniable.
Lyrically, there are anxieties about money, only being happy when you’re playing your guitar, the good life on a yacht etc. The music stands up . . . the production probably isn’t what would have been best for such a live high energy band. Maybe that’s why it still sounds so raw & full of holyrawkfire at its best.
Looking back to all those great groups of the 1960s, makes me realize Cream’s members have kept at it in many fascinating ways through career crashes, ill health & other obstacles. Which other power trio or rock band has had its troopers go on to play with J.J. Cale, Carla Bley, Afro drum ensembles, Tony Williams & (added after a chat with JBNBlog ally Randy Fisher) Spectrum Road & so many more finding (separate) homes in such a universe of music? Fresh Cream. Still fresh in 2012.

The bicycle trip must have been to Greg Curnoe’s. Who was with me on the trip? The C&W (does anybody say that anymore?) track would have been something pretty silly for WizJOORN (ie. Wizard’s Journey, y’know?) am 8mm film our band had made. About wizards on a journey. Which might remind you of Magical Mystery Tour, now that JBNBlog can reflect on it. At the time, we thought we were being original & (now) can be seen as direct ancestors of Harry Potter. Well. Maybe. Okay, no. Not in a million wizardly years.

*An occasional series based on a v. cryptic diary kept as a pen&ink forerunner to JBNBlog during the late 1960s, when our family lived in London, Stratford (parts of summers of 1966 & 1967), Victoria, B.C. (July 4, 1968-July 4, 1969) and then London again until June, 1970 when I was in Grade 13.
