RIP MCA

- May 4th, 2012

Like many who hit adolsence in the late ’80s and early ’90s, it was hard to escape the draw of hip-hop music, and more specifically, the Beastie Boys.

They were genre mashing punk-rockers from Brooklyn who eventually became one of the biggest rap acts of the ’90s.

They pulled in fans from diverse groups: Punks, alt-rock fans, hip hop kids, frat boys, and so on.

They blurred lines in music, and helped shape popular culture as we know it today. The Beastie Boys – Ad Rock, Mike D and MCA – were a big part of my youth. Their three ’90s albums – Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty got heavy play and still hold up today, partly because of the nostalgia, but mostly because they made great music.

It was sad news Friday to hear that Adam Yauch, aka MCA, died after battling cancer, but he and the other members of the Beasties get a big thanks from this writer and most of his friends.
