Where’s the God of War movie?

- February 7th, 2013
God of War Ascension

Get off your knees and make a movie, Kratos!

You can’t swing an old-school wired joystick without hitting a video game that’s currently being turned into a movie. Assassin’s Creed, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Splinter Cell and World of Warcraft are all headed to the big screen sooner rather than later.

And now Paul Walker (from the Fast & Furious flicks) will be scraping a razor across his noggin for a cinematic reboot of Hitman, this time simply called Agent 47. Which sounds like the worst game-to-movie casting choice since Mark Wahlberg played Max Payne.

But where’s Kratos?

Last year we heard a script for a God of War movie was complete and Universal Pictures was on board, but there hasn’t been much talk since. I was curious, so I asked God of War: Ascension game director Todd Papy at a recent Sony preview event in L.A. what the deal is with the cinematic debut of ancient Greece’s angriest warrior.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t know.” So much for that scoop.

But Papy does hope the recent God of War: Ascension live-action commercial will reignite interest in a film. One of the problems I’ve always seen with a God of War movie is Kratos’ distinct look and superhuman build could be tough to replicate with a normal, mortal human. In fact I assumed the Kratos in the ad was at least partially CG, or the result of extensive prosthetics. Not so, according to Papy.

“There are minor prosthetics to get the chin right and some of the nose, but for the most part that is Brandon,” said Papy. (He’s referring to Brandon Myles White, the fitness model who plays Kratos in the commercial.)

“Bodywise, that is Brandon,” said Papy. “The CG stuff is mostly background.”

So maybe a human being could convincingly play Kratos in the movie, when and if it ever happens. But chances are the role won’t go to T. C. Carson, the actor who provides Kratos’ voice in the games.

Even though the 54-year-old Carson did some performance capture for Kratos in God of War: Ascension – the first time the same actor has done the big bald man’s voice and mo-cap – it wasn’t always the best fit.

“T.C. does not move like Kratos,” said Papy. “He’s got dancer hips, and the way he moves – this is going to sound weird, but he sashayed a little too much. We had to take some of that out.”

Id say stone cold steve austin would make the perfct god of war in body and look wise but not in voice wise. I wanna see this game make it, its been a big deal since it came out really. Street Fighter made it, Silent Hill made it, Dead or Alive made it. i understand how ya feel man, i think it would pass up Immortals or Wrath of the Titans, but as we know they’ll cut out alot of blood and guts and maybe puss him out with his brutallness. They’ll also most likely change the story a bit or completely.

Tsvetan Hristov , the guy has the look and the build, and TC carson could b dub’d in for voice

I say there are a few different people that would work good as Kratos, as far as body and fighting goes. The Rock, Jason Stathem, Vin Diesel or even Gerard Butler ( if they made it kinda like 300). With The Rock, Stathem & Diesel they all have the build, moves and even shaved head like Kratos. No matter who they got to do the movie, I would defiantly watch it. I love all of the God of War games, its the only game that I have gotten my wife into she gets hooked on it too, because of the story line and she don’t care for gaming at all

I personally believe Bill Goldberg could make a perfect kratos. He would need minor changes to his voice but other than that hed be great!

  5. kevin Jaymoney | March 9, 2013 at 6:01 pm

I think Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will fit the role of Kratos

  6. frank | March 10, 2013 at 9:54 pm

Tech N9ne should play as kratos. They look similar I don’t know if they sound similar though. But definitely Tech N9ne as Kratos.

My pick for Kratos would be Nathan Jones from a physical build point of view. Of course he played Boagrius in “Troy”. The guy is massive and he’s tall like Kratos. With a little movie magic that he would kill in that role….

  8. Ed Davis | March 13, 2013 at 2:13 am

I think Michael Jai White would be a perfect Kratos in voice & physique. Or just use the guy Joseph Gatt & add TC Carson’s voice into movie later.. No harm no foul..

  9. Kevin Morrison | March 16, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I agree 100% that the role could only be played perfectly by Nathan Jones. I have thought of this for years.

And Tech n9ne is the stupidest idea ever.

i think either d Rock,Stone cold steven Austin or Goldberg will fit d role of kratos cos of their physical built body and d fighting technics even d voice…….bt i’ll likke d Rock to play d role cos he got it all.

i would make a good kratos.

  12. oblivious | March 24, 2013 at 3:26 am

    NATHAN JONES….

  13. kratos | March 26, 2013 at 12:17 am

the main point here is that the guy must be able to act the role well… and please put a good script behind it.

The Rock, Jason Stathem, Vin Diesel can act well.. vin diesel is the only one that could pass as a Greek, unless you make the entire cast ethnic mix.

than we only need to look at a bold, muscle build actual actor to carry out the greatest game action hero/evil of all times. KRATOS respect the legend, don’t make him weak or build on a love story (soapy story).

Manu Bennett as Kratos! For Spartacus fans, Crixus.

  15. king | May 8, 2013 at 2:27 pm

    the rock

  16. Dita | May 11, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Well, whoever plays Kratos… TC has to do the voice, otherwise, it won’t be Kratos.

  17. John | May 12, 2013 at 12:35 pm

    Bill goldberg

  18. mahdi | May 17, 2013 at 2:15 pm

tom hardy is the best choice if they make up him he will look exactly like kratos and his builds are goo and his height he might be alittle shorter tan kratos and im not sure maybe they are the same and he really is a good actor

  19. Davis | May 23, 2013 at 5:13 am

Only one man…. Michael Jai White. Hes big, but not too big. Hes ripped with muscle, he looks decent with a goatee, and he has a deep voice just like TC Carson, and he even has facial similarities of Kratos. Don’t believe me check out the movie “Blood and Bone” starring Michael Jai White. I know I can make a believer out of you!!! The rock, too big. Diesel, no way. MICHAEL JAI WHITE FOR THE GHOST OF SPARTA…. FOR THE MERCILESS GOD OF WAR…. FOR KRATOS!!!!

  20. smoothguru | June 3, 2013 at 4:19 am

micheal jai white & the rock are decent choices but VIN DIESEL is much kratos than either of them HANDS DOWN!!!! VIN DIESEL NEEDS TO BE KRATOS without a doubt

  21. Super Harley | June 4, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Where the hell is this movie? I’ve been waiting since the very first God of War. This franchising was a complete success. Why to not transform it in a movie trilogy? I have no doubts that it would be so expected as Resident Evil is nowadays.

Directors, producers, script writers, please do it! All video-game frans (regardless of PS3, Xbox 360, Wii or anythiing) are waiting for this.

  22. dymo | June 19, 2013 at 8:49 am

    goldberg is the best

  23. mjcarter | June 20, 2013 at 4:49 am

Vin Diesel is the perfect choice, he can act, he’s hands down got the closest voice to Kratos, his rage he acts out is viscous and unrelenting, he can play the mournful part excellent when Kratos is reminiscing, he’s got the build and flexibility and agility for his size, the exact same as Kratos, he’s a brute, and he’s young enough if this movie is successful he would be able to be Kratos for 2, and 3 or more if needed. ENOUGH WITH THE GOLDBERG AND STONE COLD SHIT PLEASE THEY ARE PISS POOR CHOICES IN EVERY ASPECT! MAINLY THEY CAN’T ACT FOR SHIT!!! VIN DIESEL IS THE BEST OPTION PROVE ME OTHERWISE PLEASE!

  24. Lockman | July 7, 2013 at 3:40 am

I would certainly have to agree with vin diesel He would have to hit the gym and rip up a bit but as for voice and acting skills for hes top dog, the rocks to Hollywood He doesn’t have the dark side to him. Golberg, Austin Their acting is deff not strong enough. micahel jai white, I`m not really sure what anyone was thinking there? Jason statham doesn’t have the height or enough meat on his bones. Nathan jones would easily look like kratos but does he have the acting skills? Can or could he do the moves that would be required of him, Could he produce the speed kratos would need to have? hrmm tough choices

  25. Lockman | July 7, 2013 at 3:41 am

Oh and the rock is doing Hercules, Which is mythology depending on how he plays that role, Could be an intro for god of war?

  26. FACE | July 23, 2013 at 5:18 pm

I agree Vin Diesel would be the perfect Kratos

  27. Kshu | August 2, 2013 at 5:47 pm

Bill goldberg is the perfect choice. His acting is much stronger than people give him credit for. I mean come on.. Look at the dude.. He’s kratos all the way. Even his voice is sufficient. Watch one of his earlier entrances in wrestling and tell me you don’t see kratos walking to the ring.

  28. Zeus3677 | August 23, 2013 at 9:34 pm

Man, I gotta stick with Nathan Jones lol! Not only does he have the stature and build, but the facial expression very closely resembles Kratos too. Look at him in Troy, the arch on the eyebrows is perfect man! Of course he has to be able to handle a leading role but that can be taught….not that he can’t. But the size is there, the traps are there, the chest is there…..come on man! I know other guys like Michael White are ripped but his skin isn’t that dark, I mean, he’s Greek. Goldberg would be my only other choice. Vin has a good role for the voice but I’ve never been a fan of his acting. I’ve just always been able to see through it and I can’t take him seriously. Nathan Jones has already been in movies from the same time period so he has a few things going for him. He’s studied on the time period and apparently is a fan of Greek mythology. But whoever is chosen, it’s going to take a little movie magic to get the superhuman build down!

  29. Zeus3677 | August 23, 2013 at 9:37 pm

The Rock would be a decent choice except for the face man. That dude has always been big but over the last several months he’s seriously swollen to the size of a bodybuilder!

  30. Samantha | August 24, 2013 at 10:33 pm

I Think Dominic Purcell Would Be A Great Choice Or Brandon From The Commercial.

  31. Ryan | August 26, 2013 at 3:42 am

Look up Tsvetan Hristov. He is doing a short film on GOW and he looks exactly like Kratos.

  32. Codysplace | September 15, 2013 at 10:47 am

It’s not just about looks and voice, they gotta be able to act, Nathan jones as the acting diversity of a tumor, that goes for Steve Austin, Jason Statham and pretty much everyone I’ve seen suggested,
Personally I’m partial to maybe Djimoun Hounsu. He’s the only person I think that has the build, and most important, the acting chops to make it something worth watching, just praying that who ever they get its not Nathan Jones, The Rock, Vin Deisel, or Stone Cold…

  33. KiloSixKilo | September 18, 2013 at 7:55 am

    Jason Momoa….Game of thrones

  34. Michael McFarland | November 8, 2013 at 1:06 pm

I think personally I would make the best kratos no computer graphics needed. I’m built like a beast and resemble him.. Not joking look me up on Facebook by my other email touchesme@gmail.com

  35. Branden | December 4, 2013 at 7:23 pm

Vin deisel as kratos, magneto as zues, mickey rourke as aries, the actress from clash of the titans as atheena

  36. delboride | January 9, 2014 at 6:29 pm

(please admire me!!!) after you read this!… sorry for poor english! i will tell you some one and I want you all, just pay more attention on his face and his stance . you will see the real kratos himself in his face hiding behind some digital effects and make ups!!! he is not some one except Turbo in undisputed III ” MYKEL JENKINS “…. imagine him acting as kratos after some make ups and digital effects .and but why you guys just emphasize on some physical fitneses for the roll of kratos or just look on some ones background in rolling the similar characters in other movies and there successes as some characters . but you should know that the most important reason for kratos to become so popular or lets say in this way…the most important reason for GOD OF WAR game serieses popularity,is because of kratos himself and his face-state specially, and his stance and also his voice whitch THE ROCK or Van deisel or some other guys look like them dont have the proper state, and you should know that we are not looking for some one gigantic and big like a monster! we are looking for some one pliable which, in spite of having proper face-state has a good and flexiable physical shape so that could handle well what the director wants and what are things that The character needs that the same person has. so that if you were a little more smart and sharp, you would have act as a director, and choose “MIKEL JENKINS” as a proper guy for rolling the role of kratos…. nothing more! farewell

  37. crowshadowdemon | March 12, 2014 at 11:42 pm

I agree that vin diesel should be ratios all the way he is the closest thing to being kratos

  38. jon | September 17, 2014 at 1:55 am
