So, a new trailer for the next Call of Duty has hit the web. And so fans of the series are going ballistic.
Perhaps my own distaste with first-person shooters is colouring my view of it, (I think the FPS peaked with Wolfenstein 3D) but it looks cheesy, jingoistic and just plain silly to me.
Unlike the previous instalments in the COD series, this one takes place in the future (2025) and the trailer opens with a retired sergeant in a rest home telling his story. And admittedly, the graphics in that cutscene look quite impressive. He really looks like you’d expect a crabby, bitter, old soldier in a rest home to look like.
But the actual gameplay footage just looks sad. The planes, tanks and helicopters all look like something out of a schlocky scifi TV show from the 1960s.
Granted, some of the game takes place during the ’80s, which includes, as in seen in a brief clip during the trailer, a horseback chase in Afghanistan. That, at least, looks realistic. But overall, the game doesn’t look very enticing.
Then again, you may disagree. Watch the trailer below and judge for yourself.
