Ellen Page upset game stole her likeness

- June 23rd, 2013
The many faces of Ellen Page

One of these things is not like the others. Ellen Page (C) is seen with the characters Jodie Holmes from “Beyond Two Souls” (R), which she plays, and Ellie from “The Last of Us” (L), which she does not – and yet still looks like her. (Screenshots/WENN.com)

Canadian actress Ellen Page seems a little miffed about the look chosen for Ellie – a character in the recent release The Last of Us, Kotaku reports.

The Inception actress posted to Reddit, in one of their Ask Me Anything threads, her displeasure over the fact that Ellie looks a great deal like her:

“I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated.”

The games themselves likely offer different gameplay. Developed by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is a third-person survivor horror adventure where you fight off zombie-like hordes in a post-apocalyptic U.S. (You can read Steve Tilley’s review of the game here.)

Meanwhile, Beyond Two Souls is described as a “psychological action thriller” where you play Jodie Holmes (Page) through 15 years of her life. (The game also features Willem Dafoe.)

As Beyond Two Souls won’t be released until October, it’s hard to know for sure how similar it will be to The Last of Us. Though, considering the developer is Quantic Dream – the company responsible for Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy – my guess is the game will be less of a shooter than an interactive drama action-adventure title, with the “action” reduced to multiple choice conversations and quick time events.

Still, Ellie does look like and, based on The Last of Us trailers, even sounds a great deal like Ellen Page – albeit a younger version of her. Not to mention the fact they have similar names. It’s hard to remember that The Last of Us is not the game that features Page.

Ashley Johnson

Ashley Johnson plays Ellie in “The Last of Us.” (WENN.com)

Ellie is played by Ashley Johnson who, despite having worked steadily since the ’90s, is most likely best known as Chrissy Seaver from Growing Pains.

As a sort of defence, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckman took to Twitter to applaud Johnson’s performance in the game:

In fact, before the game release, Druckmann redesigned Ellie “to better reflect Ashley (Johnson)’s personality and also resemble a slightly younger teen more fitting to the story,” he told IGN. But Ellie still looks a lot more like Page than Johnson.

What do you think? Does Page have a right to be pissed? Or is she overreacting? Because as you can see in this trailer for Beyond Two Souls below, Jodie Holmes is the more accurate Ellen Page avatar.

This character is absolutely modeled on Ellen Page. I’d be pretty creeped out if I was her. The likeness is without question deliberate and could potentially damage her career. This game could come to represent her in damaging ways which she has no control over. Seems like a new legal battle ground – virtual identity theft. I think the real Ellen page is being very patient (perhaps too patient) and level headed about his.

The previous poster that says she “a little high ion herself” is a simple idiot not worth reading.

That’s why Actors always seem high on themselves, because random idiots who sit on mommy’s couch and have no real fame to defame so they have no idea what infringement is, there losers who can barely hold down a 9 – 5 it interferes with their precious sleep time, If someone used my likeness in any way id have a lawyer on speed dial before a response was issued!

Having been in 1 movie for all of 30-40 seconds of dialogue I doubt my likeness will be threatened in any form..

And I also highly doubt using my likeness would propel this games sales in anyway, having a Oscar nominated actress could be a different story, Should just be common sense, “Hey Legal does this look like anyone whom could in turn be in a actionable position against this title its lesser known publisher or yous the better known publisher?” no? cool carry on. all it would take im sure most large corps have a legal staff for this reason your paying them a theifs ransom use them its why you have them!

This article “author” is pretty high on himself, using a short comment from a reddit thread to create a whole story. He also puts words in Page’s mouth. She said she didn’t appreciate it, that hardly counts as being pissed or overreacting. But ya know, good internet writing dude.

Acting in a video game is a very suitable place for her “talents”.

I’ve played the game and she doesn’t look that much like her but I guess it’s a good way to keep her name in the news.

I find she looks more like Alexis Bledel then Ellen, though you could say that they look similar too.
