Lindsay Lohan to sue over ‘Grand Theft Auto V’

Lindsay Lohan has “called in her lawyers” over her alleged portrayal in Grand Theft Auto V, TMZ reports.

According to the site, promotional artwork for the Rockstar Games/Take-Two Interactive title is at issue. It features a woman in a bikini and sunglasses, holding a cellphone that Lohan believes resembles her. But this might be a bit of a stretch. This isn’t like when Naughty Dog allegedly stole Ellen Page’s likeness for the character of Ellie in The Last of Us.

As the Daily Dot noted back in September, many gamers have suggested the bikini wearer looks like Chuck/Dexter actress Yvonne Strahovski, as well as models Candice Swanepoel and Kate Upton.

And with respect to Upton, a Reddit user, who goes by the username tchoob, even went so far as to post an animated gif, comparing the promo shot to a similar-looking picture from a photo shoot of the model.

But no one, to my knowledge, (other than Lohan herself) has compared the bikini-clad woman to the Mean Girls star.

The model depicted in the artwork, is actually a woman named Shelby Welinder. You can see her posing with a bus stop ad of her cartoon self below:

And upon hearing the news of Lohan’s possible lawsuit, the model had a little fun on Twitter at the star’s expense. (Though she appears to be quoting someone else):

But the promotional art is only part of Lohan’s beef with the game, TMZ says. There are a couple of side missions in the game involving celebutantes, whose experiences somewhat mirror Lohan’s own.

In one sequence, players come across a celebrity named Lacey Jonas hiding from the paparazzi in an alleyway because she’s not wearing any makeup. She asks to help her escape and get her home safely. TMZ says Lohan believes that scene resembles Lohan’s own attempt to flee the media in the past.

In another side mission, players help a paparazzo get a shot of Poppy Mitchell (an “innocent” America’s sweetheart-style celebrity like Lohan once was) having sex in the courtyard of a hotel. The location looks similar to the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, where Lohan lived during the filming of Liz & Dick.

Warning: the video below is a touch graphic. But just a touch.

But even these scenarios don’t necessarily suggest the game based sequences on Lohan’s life, specifically. I mean, plenty of celebs have had unpleasant run-ins with the paparazzi over the years and plenty have also made sex tapes or have been caught on tape having sex. And, actually, I don’t believe Lohan ever released a sex tape, unless you count her recent role in The Canyons.

But what do you think? Does Lindsay Lohan have a case? Let us know in the comments.

even if GTA V does have Lohan references, Rockstar is protected by parody laws. that is right, every time you see a headline about some spoiled celeb getting pissed because some moie/game/tv show etc. made fun of them and they sued, the case was quickly thrown out. that would be the part we never hear about.

That’s a fair point. The parody defence would likely protect Rockstar and Take Two in the event of a suit over the paparazzi content – and since the artwork that supposedly “looks like her” isn’t actually made from a photo of her, that part of the suit would likely be thrown out as well. But she may have other complaints about the game.

what a looser and wanna-be she is (she’s only famous, or rather infamous, for being a drunk idiot and getting in trouble with the law). I wonder if she will ever grow up and realize her stupidity! the graphic doesn’t look close enough to her for the suit to proceed, and it was based on someone else so I feel she has no chance at all to win
