In an exclusive ad on Yahoo for Star Trek: The Video Game, William Shatner, the one and true Captain James Tiberius Kirk, once again battles his nemesis the Gorn – a reptilian humanoid alien he fought in the original Star Trek episode Arena.
In Arena, Kirk orders the Enterprise crew to give chase to an alien spaceship that attacked an outpost they were visiting. But in their pursuit, they disturb a race of omnipotent beings, who transport Kirk and the captain of the alien vessel (the Gorn) to a nearby planet so they can engage in an old school brawl to determine dominance. The Gorn easily outmatches Kirk in physical strength. But Kirk is crafty. He figures out how to make gunpowder from minerals he finds on the planet’s surface and fashions a gun barrel out of bamboo-like plant. He then shoots the Gorn using a diamond-like projectile. And the Gorn is vanquished. But Kirk shows the Gorn mercy and doesn’t finish him off.
In this follow-up video, Shatner is playing the Star Trek: The Video Game, which features Chris Pine’s far less impressive Kirk discovering a scarier, redesigned race of Gorn. Video game Kirk is killed almost immediately and Shatner complains to his gaming partner, who turns out to be the original series Gorn, of not having his back. Their argument quickly becomes physical and we get a rematch of their “epic” fight – albeit slower this time. Shatner just turned 82 on March 22, after all. And the Gorn’s no spring chicken either. But the living room tussle includes some of Captain Kirk’s patented moves, such as the double-fisted punch, the judo chop to the neck and the double ear clap, which disoriented the Gorn in the TV episode.
The Gorn costume is actually a replica of the one from the television series. According to Yahoo, the original costume was mostly destroyed, and the head was sold at an auction in 2006 for $27,500 US. But this Gorn still looks just as cheezy as the original.
Star Trek: The Video Game is developed by Digital Extremes and published by Namco Bandai Games, Paramount Pictures, Bad Robot Interactive, K/O Paper Products and CBS Studios. It will launch in North America on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows on April 23.
