It says something about Grand Theft Auto that the release of a mere preview trailer for a new installment in the series generates more buzz than some game franchises get over the course of their entire existence.
So it is with the Grand Theft Auto V trailer, which is causing Twitter, Facebook and gaming forums to erupt in speculation and discussion and frame-by-frame analysis this afternoon. (Rockstar’s own website notched more than 1,000 comments on the trailer within the first hour of it going live.) While little is known about the game’s plot specifics and no release date has been mentioned, it appears GTA V will return to Los Santos, a Los Angeles analog that was one of the settings of 2004′s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The trailer looks, well, pretty fantastic. But this is Rockstar, and these guys know how to make incredible-looking teasers for their games. (Remember how blown away we were by the first trailer for 2008′s Grand Theft Auto IV? And did the game itself live up to that? You be the judge.)
What do you think? Has this whetted your appetite for more guns, cars and criminal intrigue, or has the whole open-world game genre leapfrogged past Rockstar’s flagship franchise?
