We test out a lot of apps at GetConnected and the coolest one I’ve come across this week is Sonar. Have you ever been at an event or party and later discovered that you’re friend or colleague had attended as well? The Sonar app (available for free for iPhone and iPad) makes sure you don’t miss another connection. With it you can walk into a room and find and connect with friends, business contacts, fellow alumni, your social media followers, or even like-minded singles.
The app works by geotracking your location via Foursquare check-ins and analyzing your publicly available information on Facebook, Foursquare, and Twitter. It then outputs the connections that you share with folks nearby, such as mutual Facebook friends. It’s great for business-minded people who want to build relationships at networking events. Other possible use opportunities include concerts, cafés, dog parks, and bars – Perhaps that attractive person you’ve been eyeing is connected to you in some way. You may even find out about their favourite band or hobby based on their publicly available information, giving you an opening line.
The app definitely wades into creepy, stalkerish territory, but if used responsibly it has some great possibilities. It’s incredibly useful for starting up conversations at events where you don’t know anyone. What do you think – Would you use it?
