KitCam sounds mighty close to the name one of my favourite chocolate bars, but as an app that works in conjunction with the iOS camera, it’s certainly a nice sweet addition, especially if you just got a new iPhone 5 for Christmas.

KitCam, by GhostBird Software, the developers of PhotoForge, is a virtual camera kit that adds 15 lenses, 32 different film emulations and 20 frames to you devices camera that can be previewed in real-time can really open up the functionality of your iOS camera’s photo and video features.

It has a powerful shot editor which offers a comprehensive toolset of 12 functions, including cropping, straightening, exposure, white balance, colour mixing and more. Improve your shots whether you’re shooting in automatic or manual mode.

It also has a stabilizer mode to help avoid blurry pictures and burst-mode multi-shot functionality to zero in on just the right shot. You can also select  from four different aspect ratios including 1×1, 3×2, 4×3 and 16×9, all of which can be previewed live and a number of composition aides like histogram and virtual horizon can help you grab the best shot possible. It has a low-light boost feature (iPhone 5 only), that will give you a better yield even in low light. And on the iPhone 4/4S/5, the app will automatically expose and focus on faces found in the scene.

Its non-destructive editor allows you to change or undo anything you had elected when you first took the picture.  And finally, you can configure auto archiving to ensure your shots are backed up as well as photo sharing on places like Facebook, Flickr and even Dropbox, so you can show your creations to your friends and family.

KitCam version 1.2, ($1.99) has been optimized for iPhone 5; however, it will work with most other iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models running Apple iOS 5.1 or later. It’s a no-brainer addition to your iOS arsenal and is available for download from the iTunes app store.

From what I discovered, the app hasn’t been updated in a while, in fact, it looks like the developer, GhostBird Software has been purchased by Yahoo. http://kitcamapp.com They indicated that you can reload your existing software via iCloud, but no further updates will be happening.
