Apple lineup refresh expected along with iPhone 5

- September 11th, 2012

Apple Cook

With all the hints that we’ve seen thus far it seems that it’s likely a foregone conclusion that will see the highly anticipated iPhone 5 officially announced at the Apple event taking place tomorrow morning September 12th at the Yerba Buena Center in downtown San Francisco. But along with the expected iPhone will likely be a refresh to some of the rest of Apple’s product line. Of course the final proof won’t be until tomorrow morning or afternoon depending on where you live.

The new iPhone 5 is expected to have a larger 4” screen, a new nine-pin docking connector, slightly thinner than the 4S and offer 4G high-speed connectivity (where available).

It would also make sense that, as a follow-up to the popular 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, that Apple would continue the new tradition of upgrading the screens by offering up  a 13-inch baby brother. I think this would make a nice sweet spot between the MacBook Air and the larger 15-inch at a price point between $1600-$1800.

The iMac is also a candidate for a refresh. The buzz is that the new models will be thinner and might even come with a Retina display, although I wonder how costly it would be to offer such a screen display in a 27-inch model. I’m pretty bullish on a new model showing up tomorrow but still not 100% certain on the high-res display.

With today’s smart phones having such increased functionality, one thing that we don’t hear too much about these days is the iPod. However, given that the new iPhone 5 will be the first of Apple’s iOS devices with a new 9-pin connector, the smaller form factor opens up the doors to changes especially on the iPod nano and iPod shuffle. What about incorporating AirPlay? Who knows?

If new iPods are on the horizon, maybe we’ll see a replacement for the famous white signature earbuds as well.

Don’t Expect iPad Mini

What I don’t think we will see tomorrow is the iPad mini. Apple is inevitably going to come out with one but I think 2 major hits might be too much for one day. I would expect that if we were to see one in 2012 in would be either in October or early November in time for the holiday season.

The Apple event begins at 10 AM Pacific time, 1 PM Eastern time and I’ll be tweeting the outcomes as they happen and will follow-up with a recap highlighting the event, so stay tuned.

What do you think Apple will announce? Have you been waiting for the iPhone 5?
