Apple CarPlay for the vehicle you already have

- April 16th, 2014

PioneerCar Play

Were you excited about Apple’s CarPlay that brings Siri’s voice control and other iPhone 5 functionality to your car, but saddened by the fact that it’s only available on new cars? If a brand new car is not in the cards in 2014, you might still be able to get Apple CarPlay in the vehicle you currently own as Pioneer Electronics will introduce a firmware update to their five 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receiver systems later this year.

In March we looked at Apple ‘iOS in the Car’ which has been rolled out as  Apple CarPlay,  making it that much easier to use your iPhone 5/5S/5C (with iOS 7.1) in your vehicle to grab calls, access maps, listen to your tunes, or check messages and more.  All of these functions are accessible through Siri or with the push of a dedicated button on the car’s steering wheel to access your car’s native interface.

For iOS users, CarPlay is something that just makes sense. When it was announced last month, I wondered if there was some way to get it without having to buy a new car. It looks like Pioneer is the first in-dash car system after-market to step up to the plate, although I expect we’ll see others jumping on-board pretty soon.

The existing models slated for update to of CarPlay compatibility  include: AVIC-8000NEX ($1500 SRP), AVIC-7000NEX ($1300 SRP), AVIC-6000NEX ($1000 SRP), AVIC-5000NEX ($900 SRP) and AVH-4000NEX ($750 SRP). All prices are in Canadian Dollars.

If you already have one of the fab five, you’re in luck, otherwise, if this is the type of functionality you might be looking for, then at $750 SRP, (and dealer might sell for less) it’s certainly cheaper than buying a new car.

No exact date has been given for the firmware update other than it’s slated to arrive sometime this summer. For more information, check out Pioneer’s CarPlay site.
