Hands On: Motorola Brute i680

Motorola Brute i680

Taking a break from what seems to be a smart phone-heavy review lineup, I recently had the chance to test the Motorola Brute i680, running on the TELUS Mike network.

The rugged cell phone is built to military specifications, and according to TELUS is “certified against blowing rain, dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, low pressure, salt, fog, humidity and solar radiation”. That should pretty much cover most of Canada’s inclement weather; though I’m not sure where solar radiation is highest in this country if you want to expose it!

I found the i680 to be hefty but not uncomfortable and the rubber molding gave it excellent grip – this is not a device that will slip easily out of your hands. The phone comes equipped with all of the standards: Bluetooth, a basic 2MP camera and built-in GPS capability. Because it runs on the MIKE network, push-to-talk direct communication is also included.

The call quality was excellent – crisp, clear and loud and the speakerphone produced similar results without much distortion. I was particularly impressed with the vibration for incoming calls/alerts – this thing shook, rattled and rolled. The ringer is also incredibly loud so missing a call is less than likely.

Navigating around the device was intuitive, thanks to the simple operating system. However, Motorola should have included a dedicated “back” button, instead of relying on a soft button to do so on different screens/menus.

Verdict: The Motorola Brute i680 is an ideal device for existing Mike network subscribers looking for a rugged cell phone. I would also recommend it for folks who are hard on their devices and want a phone that won’t need to be replaced constantly.
