It’s been along time coming, but NHL Hockey is finally back. Now while some of us simply watch the game on the big screen, there are a lot more ways to watch, keep up and get the lowdown on our favourite teams and players with your iOS devices.
One of those ways is through NHL GameCenter, by NHL Interactive Cyberenterprises, the official app for the National Hockey League. It’s a free download for the basic version with upgrades to NHL GameCenter Premium and NHL GameCentre Live available for in app purchase.
NHL GameCenter is a cool resource on its own or a great companion app for someone who’s watching the game. It gives you live scores and stats for every team and player in the NHL as well as a full season schedule, standings and customized game alerts.
For those of you who already have the app, you’ll notice a few changes in the menu structure in its recent update (version 2.0921). Basic users now have access to some of the on-demand content and post-game highlights. You don’t get a live video feed for each game but you will get a live game simulation with now near real-time shift changes including box score and play by play. I found this feature works really well when I’m trying to keep an eye on a game while I’m actually occupied during something else – like creating these blog posts.
While stats are certainly important to some, for me, it’s the stuff you don’t always see that’s key for me. There’s a neat selection of video bloopers, pranks, unlucky bounces, blasts from the past and many more.
And just in case you’re not rooting for the home team, you now have the ability to have five favourites instead of just one.
For $4.99 you can upgrade to NHL GameCenter Premium through an in app purchase. For your five bucks for the rest of the season you can get access to home and away live radio broadcasts, in-game video highlights and condensed game replays.
If you’re really devoted; can’t get enough hockey and interested in catching out of market games, upgrade to NHL GameCenter Live. For a subscription of $49.99, you can access to live out of market games (of course these will depend on where you live) as well as additional GameCenter premium content. You’ll also have access capabilities to watch the games on multiple devices, including those like the AppleTV.
The app is universal, i.e. works on most iOS devices, but it does look pretty sweet on an iPad!
