People love taking their tunes with them, but not everyone wants to wear headphones or earbuds. Furthermore, road warriors want something that’s rugged, durable, portable and something that looks ultra cool. So two savvy skiers and cyclists have created the Boombotix Boombot REX Ultraportable Speaker.

The Boombot REX comes in a uniquely designed ruggedized package. In a single module the Boombox Rex is designed to offer 2.1 stereo sound with the built-in subwoofer. It also ports a noise canceling microphone, built-in clip and is Bluetooth controlled. In addition, it has a heavy-duty water resistant shell that can easily fit in the palm of your hand. Its built-in clip is reinforced with steel so that it can be snugly attached to your belt, bag or backpack.

REX also doubles as a speakerphone so you can actually make calls and take calls from wherever you are. Plus it’s also Siri compatible.

REX is also rechargeable and customizable. It features SoundHub technology so you can daisy chain multiple units together for even a bigger sound.

rex-exploded“We rethought how the portable speaker should be, and by doing so we focused tremendously on the feel of the product- from the size to the texture to the tuning of the audio so one can actually feel the sound while the device is in the palm of their hand,” says founders Lief Storer (28) and Chris McKleroy (24).

The found duo and their entire team seem pretty passionate about creating the ultimate portable speaker; they believe that Rex is the next evolution of smart speakers with the name being attributed as a salute to the king of dinosaurs.

“The REX ‘mimics the thump’ of the T-Rex’s footsteps as it ruled the land.”

They share that they’ve been working day and night on this project as a garage startup and after 15 months of fine-tuning it, they now want to create a reality.

“We wanted people to be aware that we are trying to build a masterpiece.”

Kickstarter Program

Now it’s not available for sale just yet. In fact, the Boombot REX Ultraportable Speaker is enrolled as a project In the KickStarter program, where projects go out and get backers and raise funds from folks like you and me, to enable to bring Rex to life.

They’re looking for $27,000 USD by January 12th if the project is to go ahead and they are already almost 50% there.

As of December 4th, they have 152 backers and have already raised $13,237 out of their goal of $27k, with still 38 days ago.

(UPDATE DEC 6, 2012:  BACKERS: 359  PLEDGES $31,309)

If you’re interested in the product, check out Boombotix Kickstarter site. Pledges start as low as one dollar and there are various pledge levels, with different cool swag available depending on the level and how much you give.

BoomBot Dog

The Boombot REX is a neat concept and could potentially be the ultimate little speaker that people are looking for; you can just grab it and go.  Clip it to you belt or backpack or attach it to the dog’s leash. It will be there whenever you need it.
