Back in May, I wrote about Samsung’s Galaxy products getting an upgrade to Android 2.3 – aka Gingerbread. The worldwide roll out seems to be a tad slow as Galaxy Tab 7″ users on this side of the Atlantic (and Pacific) are still waiting for the official upgrade.
There is another way to get Gingerbread on your Tab however – an unofficial ROM upgrade. With a number of ROMs floating around, I decided to upgrade my Tab with the Team Overcome Gingerbread ROM last week. I settled on Overcome because of the excellent and easy to understand step-by-step guide provided.
The process took about half an hour and I would recommend it for reasonably proficient users who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty doing an unofficial upgrade. The alternative of course is to wait for the official upgrade from Samsung to hit Canadian shores.
After a week’s usage, I’ve found the battery life and overall performance of the GTab to be better than Android 2.2.
