Windows 8 Dummies

Whether you’re using Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7 or maybe even Mac OS, if you’re curious about what Windows 8 might have to offer you, Dell is offering up a free pocket electronic version of a reference guide covering Microsoft’s latest operating system, entitled Windows 8 for Dummies, Dell Pocket Edition.

Offered as a free download through Dell’s marketing department, the booklet as they refer to, is a quick reference guide and a first steps tutorial on Windows 8.

Now to get it, you will have to give up a little personal information namely your name and company name, phone number and e-mail address. You will also be asked whether or not you’d like to be contacted by a DELL solutions expert.

Written by Andy Rathbone, an almost 30 year veteran in the industry and author of the original Windows for Dummies series, this 147-page, seven chapter e-book is a reference guide for Windows 8 regardless as to whether you’re running it on a touchscreen device, desktop or notebook.

As a pocket edition, it doesn’t go entirely deep into every aspect of Windows 8 but as the authour says himself, “it dishes out chunks of useful computing information (on Windows 8) when you need them.”

And while some of you may have never had any experience with or knowledge of Windows 8 it’s unlikely that unless you’ve done your research and read the blogs you might not know the good things or the bad things associated with Microsoft’s latest OS release.

I really had to chuckle. In Chapter 7, as Rathbone gives you the goods on the latter. It’s entitled “Ten Things You’ll Hate About Windows 8 (and how to fix them).

The book is complete with some good solid information written in the true Dummies form, with tips and tricks. It also has a number of illustrations and screen shots and of course since there’s no paper to print and it is an e-book many of them are actually in colour.

If you’re interested in this book, of course the price is right, simply head over to Dell’s e-book download page.

Windows 8 for IT Pros Free e-Book

In the meantime while were talking about Windows 8 e-book freebies, in my travels, I actually came across another one. This one’s titled “Introducing Windows 8: An Overview for IT Professionals”, published by Microsoft Press and written by Jerry Honeycutt.

This book is 168 pages and looks Windows 8 through the eyes of IT. It talks about preparing for deployment, delivering Windows apps; Windows 8 recovery, management, security and even Windows 8 virtualization.

According to the Microsoft Press blog, the free downloadable version is actually a preview version that contains 11 chapters. How many chapters the final edition will have, is unknown.

To download the PDF version of this book directly click here. Microsoft site suggests that if you prefer a hard copy of the final book it’s available for $14.99 through O’Reilly Media, their official distributor.
