TimsWifi

If you are a mobile warrior like I am with a penchant for consuming copious amounts of caffeine daily, you’ll be happy to know that one more major coffee stop is adding a free Wi-Fi hotspot to its menu. Tim Horton’s will be joining the ranks of Starbucks, Second Cup and more recently McDonalds by offering a free high-speed Internet connection to its patrons across Canada.

In a release issued today, Tim Hortons announced that they have already begun to rollout high-speed to more than 2,000 restaurants across the country and suggests that by September, just in time for the start of the school year, more than 90% will be on-line.

“It’s all about convenience and making life easier for our guests,” said Roland Walton, Chief Operations Officer, Tim Hortons. “Free wireless Internet at Tim Hortons will help people stay connected on the road in more locations than anyone in Canada and is yet another great reason to visit one of our restaurants to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee.”

After a 6-month rigorous testing process, Timmies has partnered with Bell to offer the free high-speed service.

Although I do like McDonalds super-sized coffee, piping-hot, with just a dash of cream along with a fruit and fibre muffin, it’s nice to know that when I stop at Tim’s for an Everything bagel and TimBits, I’ll be able to check-in on FourSquare, update my Facebook status and send out sweet tweets without having to eat up valuable 3G bytes. (For the record, I do the same at Second Cup and Starbucks, too, with different munchies of course!)

Longer Waits?

It should also being interesting to see how much longer one will need to wait in line, especially during the coffee rush-hour and how challenging it will likely be to find a seat, since free Wi-Fi probably means longer stays for some people.

In the meantime join the conversation on Twitter following @TimHortons with the hashtag #TimsWiFi. Let’s see when your favourite location goes on-line.

Looks like the Wi-Fi at my local Timmies in Edmonton is up and running!

    Wi-Fi at Timmy’s. Mmmmmm.

I’m not sure if it’ll take down Starbucks or Second Cup as a place to get work done, but it’ll definitely cut into their market share.

Funny…Country Stlye “Bistro” has offerred free Wi-Fi for a few years now…so I’m not sure why it’s a big deal that Timmies is finally cathing up!
