Marvel Comics servers jammed offering 700+ free #1 issues

If you’re a fan of comics, then you’ll be excited to know that for a very limited time, Marvel Comics in an unprecedented reader initiative is making available over 700 of their #1 issues free for download without any cost or obligation. But you’d better hurry it’s only for a a very short while and Marvel’s servers are already jammed up.

“This is the perfect way to show everyone how much we believe in our material by letting them try the first issues for free, because we’re sure once they start, they won’t stop,” says Marvel SVP – Sales, Digital & Print David Gabriel.

The cool thing about #1 issues is that you get an opportunity to revisit now well-known characters from their humble beginnings and perhaps discover new ones that you may never have followed in the past as well as newer and more recent creations.

Gabriel says they’ve made available a number of #1 issues from every era. They give examples such as Uncanny Avengers, All-new X-Men and Civil War, as well as comics classics, including the Fantastic Four, Capt. America and one of my all-time favourites,  The Amazing Spiderman.

I’m sure it’s no coincidence but the timing coincided with the last day of the  2013 SXSW Gaming Expo. While they certainly want to appeal to the classic reader, the focus seems to also be to bring new readers into the fold and perhaps for some with this new medium – digital downloads.

Don’t Wait!

The freebie promotion runs until Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 at 11:00PM Eastern, 8:00PM Pacific (corrected). You can download the free issues through their either their iOS or Android Marvel Comics app and as well as through the Marvel Comics Digital Comics Shop.

If you are interested in taking advantage of free comics, Do it now!  Marvel’s servers are already pretty jammed up and as word gets out it’ll likely become even worse.

UPDATE Mar 12: According to CNET, Marvel’s ComiXology’s servers had “buckled under the traffic load”. The post added a link to a tweet by ComiXology’s CEO David Steinberger with info for those who had an error while downloading their purchase.

Berysax, I’m not certain that it has been days. I was able to download the app on the 2nd try. But yes, I too have not been able to download the free issues. It appears that Marvel’s service provider has been having technical issues. Marvel is promising to keep us informed.
