Vertu luxury smartphone will set you back a cool $10K

Vertu

I guess timing is everything. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, or so it appears, UK-based Vertu, the maker of designer and luxury smartphones has unveiled the Vertu Ti, an Android-based smartphone with a starting price tag that might make you shake your head. Now it’s not diamond encrusted that costs almost as much as a house, but it could set you back almost as much as a stripped-down entry-level compact car.

The Vertu Ti itself is handmade in Church Crookham, Hampshire in England, about 60KM south west of London, where Vertu’s factory and offices are located. It features a strong but lightweight titanium case and a scratch-proof 3.7″ sapphire crystal screen. The company boasts its unique user interface as well as symphonic sound, “tuned in collaboration with Bang and Olufsen with musical punctuation from the London Symphony Orchestra”.

Under the hood, according to reports, the Vertu Ti is your basic middle-of-the-road Android handset, featuring a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 8MP rear and 1.2MP front cameras. TechRadar says it has a 1250mAh battery and built-in NFC [Near Field Communications]. For the price you’re paying, you’d expect the latest Android OS (Jelly Bean 4.2.1). Sadly no,  it ships with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

The choice of OS is also a bit of a surprise and I don’t mean the version of Android. Up until last year, the company was actually a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nokia, known for their Symbian and Windows phones, although apparently the Finnish phone giant still maintains a 10% stake.

I’m thinking that what might account for some of the extra costs might be the Ti’s built-in “concierge” button which SkyNews says connects the user to a team providing “curated benefits and services,”  24 hours a day.

Pricing for the Vertu Ti starts at just under £7,000  ($11,000 CAD). For those who want more, there is a “red gold mix metals” edition that can more than double that price and set you back about $22,000.

In case you’re looking for one for yourself or your sweetheart, the Vertu Ti is sold through retail stores; There are four dealers in Canada and they’re located in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Woodbridge, ON.

    Hello Greg

Any plans to have one more contest with one of those? I react strongly to most metals but not Titanium. My watch and prescription glasses are titanium – I would love to win one of those phones… as I could not afford to buy it and stay married…

In the mean-time, I would still keep the Motorola that you will draw later today.

    Have a nice day ;)
