Don’t hold your iPad, iKlip it!

iPads have found their way into many homes, offices and coffee shops, but we’re also seeing them being used on stage and in the studio. Presenters, musicians and speakers are using them for practice, rehearsal and live events, so the need to have them up front and center and hands-free right there with the microphone, has become all too important.

The iKlip by IK Multimedia is an accessory that was designed just for that purpose by clamping on to the vertical pole of a standard microphone stand or its horizontal boom. IK saw the need to have a better grip and more flexibility so it went back to the drawing board and created the iKlip 2 for iPad & also for iPad mini.

iKlip 2 offers a sure grip tightening system that secures the accessory nicely and quickly to your stand. Instead of a platform or a rest, iKlip 2 uses a claw like grip with carefully configured touch points to keep your iPad in place without ruining its surface, while still allowing for a quick insertion with quick snap clips.

As for flexibility, because we all like to position our iPads differently, the redesigned model uses IK’s new ball joint design, which gives you virtually unlimited angle adjustment and positioning capabilities, including being able to quickly rotate it between portrait and landscape mode. It’s like a global positioning system for your iPad – pardon the pun!

The Italian-made iKlip 2 feels very light but sturdy; its components are made from a strong, durable thermoplastic.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the redesigned iKlip. It was certainly well thought out. It’s built tough, but also looks cool and can be mounted and dismounted quickly – quite necessary for today’s performers. And although it was primarily designed with musicians in mind, it can see it also be great for speakers, presenters and Toastmasters like me, who are using their iPad for notes, slides or even as teleprompter. It can also be used in a kiosk set up as well.

Perhaps the only suggestion I might have for IK would be to possibly include a small carry pouch or case to cart it around.

The iKlip 2 is compatible with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation iPad. It will clamp to any pole up to 30mm in diameter, in either a vertical or horizontal position. iKlip 2 for iPad retails for $39.99 and is available directly from IK Multimedia as well as Amazon. There is also a model for iPad mini, which also sells for $39.99.

Rating: 4.5/5

(Note: if you are looking for a simple, but durable adjustable desktop stand, iKlip Studio for iPad or iPad mini ($29.99), also available through IK or Amazon might be an alternative)
